LA DISCIPLINE S'ACQUIERT EN S'INTERNATIONALISANT. L'EXEMPLE DES CONGRES INTERNATIONAUX DES AMERICANISTES (1875-1947)

Résumé

This paper first puts into its context of creation the international congress of Americanists, in Nancy, in 1875. This scientific congress stimulated and promoted an international agreement about what was to be considered legitimately americanist and what had to be rejected. The different functions played by the congress are then described, and we'll see that each time they fit into the historical and scientific characteristics of the nation hosting the congress. The number of congress each country organized shows there were nations more americanist than others. Still this scientific competition did not prevent a fundamental agreement about a supreme value that gathered them all : scientific internationalism. Its threatening after WWI and the unshakeable commitment of a handful of Americanists to fight for it definitely strengthened the very existence and the legitimacy of the international congress of Americanists itself.
